Weeks of December 17 and 31

Students received dictionaries from our local Rotary Club last week!  They will be useful as we continue to edit our writing and learn more about the English language!

Happy Wednesday families!  I hope you all are staying warm!

Looking ahead:  Students will be wrapping up their unit on fossils with a short quiz on Tuesday, December 18.  When they return from break, they'll review landforms.  They will begin a unit of study on geometry, focusing on lines, segments, rays, angles, quadrilaterals, triangles and other various polygons.  Students will be assessed on our parts of speech unit on Tuesday, December 18, as well.  After the break, they'll begin working on their dictionary and thesaurus skills.

Please join us for our Family and Friends lunch on Friday, December 14.  We'll meet you at the Seaside Cafe at 11:32!

This will be our last blog update for 2012!  Stay tuned when we return from break to learn more about what we'll be doing the first full week of school in 2013!

Have a wonderful winter break!  Thank you again for being so supportive!  I wish you and your family the best!

Week of December 10

Last Friday, students took part in our annual lapathon.  We raised over $5,000 and walked over 7,000 laps as a school!  Way to go, Beacons!  Mrs. Sarratt and Mr. Schirmer appreciate all of your donations.  They’ll go toward our school and a donation to the American Heart Association!

Happy Thursday, families!  I hope you all are doing well!

Looking ahead:   As mathematicians, we will wrap up unit 5 on place value and take a test. A study guide will go home this Friday. As scientists, we’ll wrap up our unit on rocks and minerals.  Students will be tested next week. A Study Guide will go home this Friday.  In reading, we’ll continue studying rocks and minerals through nonfiction and fiction science stories.  We’ll make connections to the activities we are doing in our science unit.  As writers, we will wrap up our grammar unit on parts of speech and begin a unit on cursive handwriting.

Please encourage your child to use his/her LIFESKILL of responsibility.  As the school year goes on, we continue to have higher expectations for third graders in order to prepare them for future grades.  I encourage the children to not become too comfortable in their study habits, but to continue striving to do their personal best.  Now is a good time to review with your child goals he/she has for third grade.  Students are always more than welcome to take home textbooks each day for extra practice, so long as they bring them back the following school day.  It is their responsibility to make this choice and remember to take them and bring them back.

Just a reminder:  Students will have a multiplication celebration at the end of February!  Continue to encourage your child to practice his/her addition, subtraction and multiplication facts.  With your supervision, they can visit the Web site:  http://resources.oswego.org/games/mathmagician/cathymath.html to help them practice their facts!

It is the flu season!  Please be sure your child drinks plenty of water and gets a lot of rest!  We try to disinfect our room each day!

Please join us for third grade's Friends and Family Lunch day next Friday, December 14!  You can meet us at the Seaside Cafe at 11:32!

Please review, sign and return the graded work in your child's communication folder.

Have a wonderful weekend!  Thank you again for all of your support!
