Looking ahead to the week of December 1

Students enjoyed a visit from Mary Jayne's mom, Mrs. Davis!  She shared many artifacts from Africa and discussed the Gullah culture.  Thank you so much for your time, Mrs. Davis!

The children enjoyed taking part in our school's Lapathon!  They raised money for our PE program and awareness about the importance of physical activity.  Thank you to Ms. Eastman and Mr. Ramos for joining us in walking laps!

Hello, families!  I hope you all are enjoying this short school week and you're looking forward to spending some well-deserved time with your families this weekend!

Looking ahead:  As mathematicians, students will continue to revisit multiplication (Topic 6), using our Envision books.  Students will focus on 8, as a factor, as well as, multiplying with three factors, and multiplying to find combinations..  Please check out our Topic 6 family letter, to help you better understand what students will be learning about next week. We'll continue our multiplication quizzes next week.  Students will be tested on their 5s facts! During language arts, students will study capitalization in quotations, sentences, with proper nouns and in titles.  They'll also continue a narrative writing unit.  The children will continue working on cursive handwriting.  As readers, they'll study characters' traits.  As scientists, students will begin learning about sound.

Half-day:  Students will have a half day Friday, December 5.  Lunch will be served and students will be dismissed at 11:30.  They will also have SAIL.  Please be sure to send a note, if your child's transportation changes.

An opportunity to donate:  Please feel free to share the following site with family, friends, or members of the community, if they would like to donate items to our class!  We'll periodically add to this site throughout the year for items needed in our classroom.  You can search for Bookman Road Elementary, Mrs. West's class to find out more!  CrowdED Donations

A note from Second Grade:
Dear Bookman Beacons,
Second Grade is kicking off their Service Learning Project today! Please share this information with your students and/or on your newsletter or blog. Thanks so much for your help!!

Who: Second Grade is kicking off their Service Learning Project. Dog and cat food will be given to the Banfield Hospital for pet owners that cannot afford food for their pets.

What: We are asking that students collect dog and cat food for struggling pet owners.

WhenNovember 17th - December 19th

How: Please ask students to bring in cat food or dog food.

Where: Please ask them to drop it off to the cafeteria drop off area. There will be a designated Banfield Hospital drop off sign.

Why:  We are collecting dog and cat food for struggling pet owners. "Providing pet food can be the difference between being able to keep a cherished pet and being forced to surrender him or her. We routinely hear from pet owners living on a fixed income that they are sharing their limited human food supply with their pet which means both human and pet are facing hunger and lack of proper nutrition."

One last note:  The weeks are winding down, before the arrival of my first baby!  I can't believe it's almost here - December 24!  I wanted to pass along to you that Mrs. Norris, who was a kindergarten teacher at Bookman, will be my long-term substitute.  She retired a few years ago, and some of you may remember her because you're child was in her class, or perhaps she was your child's long-term substitute last year.  I am so fortunate that she'll be joining the children, while I'm at home.  They will be in such wonderful, caring hands!  I want to thank you again for all of your support and enthusiasm, as I embark on this brand new adventure!  I appreciate your well wishes and love, more than you know!  I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving week with your families!  Thank you again for everything that you do!

Looking ahead to the week of November 10

Ms. Sease spent time reviewing nonfiction text features with students.  She also introduced them to Big Universe, a great resource for reading books online.  Students have access to Big Universe at home, if they would like read books in that manner.

Students enjoyed reading Native American legends together.  They focused on the central message of each legend and determined what lesson would have been taught to Native American children.

Hello, families!  I hope you all enjoyed the extra hour this weekend!

Report cards:  Please take a moment to review your child's report card with him/her.  Now is a good time to reflect on this nine weeks and set goals for the next quarter.  You will also find a self-reflection in your child's report card cover.  Please sign and return only the report card cover, as soon as possible!  You may keep the contents of the report card cover.

Friendly reminder about responsibility:  I have several students that are forgetting to bring back either their communication folder, homework packet, and/or study guide to class. Please talk with your child at home about using the LIFESKILL of Responsibility so he/she is prepared for class. This past week, I had over half the class not turn in or have their social studies books, fact file, or study guide to review for our test in class. We hold high expectations for our students in third grade and I want them to be prepared to succeed!

Looking ahead:  As mathematicians, students will continue to revisit multiplication (Unit 5), using our Envision books.  This means, students will have a textbook!  Students are welcome to take home this textbook any day, so long as they bring it back the following school day.  Please check out our Topic 5 family letter, to help you better understand what students will be learning about the net few weeks.
Students also have access to the Envision web site.  Their log in information is located on the password sheet, which is in their agenda books.
We'll continue our multiplication quizzes next week.  Students will be tested on their 3s facts! During language arts, students will begin creating Colonial Period picture books, based on what they learn this week in social studies.  They'll incorporate elements of informational text features.  The children will also continue working on cursive handwriting.  As historians, students will have an open book test Monday, November 10.  As scientists, they'll kick off a new unit!  They'll study soil, land features, and water features.

Health Screening:  Students will have their health screening Thursday, November 6.  If your child wears glasses, please make sure he/she does not leave them at home this day!

A note from the Veterans Day Committee: Those who have served in our Armed Forces are the foundation of this great country we live in.  They have sacrificed their time, strength, portions of their lives and in some cases, given the ultimate sacrifice and have died in defense of our nation.  We would like to honor those veterans by creating a Wall of Honor.  Please ask either your homeroom teacher or Mrs. Sadler for a "brick" to write your veteran's name and information on.  Please return these as soon as possible or at the latest by Nov. 10th to be included in the wall. Also, please invite your veteran to our special Veterans Day program on November 11th.  If you have a picture you would like to include in our special program please send it electronically to rnord@richland2.org.
