Looking ahead to the week of February 5 (Week A)

Calling all BookMEN!  Please join us for lunch Friday, February 2, in the Seaside Cafe at 11:35!  We look forward to seeing you!

Students are enjoying our fraction unit!  They've been working on beating their class time, while playing a game called, "Fraction Domino."  It's a great way to practice visualizing fractions (and using the LIFESKILL of cooperation, too).

Hi, families! I hope you all are having a great week!

Valentine's Day:  As you know, Valentine's Day is Wednesday, February 14.  Since we only have two celebrations a year (winter and end-of-the-year), we will not have a party.  Students may bring in Valentine's Day cards for each of their classmates (but it's not a requirement!).  We have 18 students in our class.  Please do not write a name in the "to" section on the card.  Doing so, allows us to pass out the cards in a more efficient manner.  Also, please do not send in any unhealthy items.  You can review our Health Committee recommendations for healthy snacks below.

BookMEN:  We will be celebrating the 100th day of school Friday, February 2!  Time sure does fly by, when you're having fun!  We encourage BookMEN to join us for lunch in the Seaside Cafe at 11:35!

State House "Being There Experience":  If you have not signed and returned your child's State House permission form, please do so by Thursday, February 1.  Be sure to jot down which lunch option you choose for your child, so you'll know whether or not to pack a lunch Tuesday, February 20.

Report Cards:  You may keep your child's report card and comments, but please sign and return the report card sleeve!

Looking ahead to next week:  As historians, students will wrap up their American Revolution unit.   As mathematicians, they will continue learning about fractions with the second half of our module.  We will be using the Engage New York curriculum for this unit, so please see the family letter below, as well as, the link for further information for families about Engage New York, toward the bottom of our class blog.  As readers, students will study theme.  As writers, they will take the district writing assessment.  They will also review how to summarize and start reading American Revolutionary biographies, in preparation for their in-class group projects the following week.

Thank you again for all of your support!  Have a great weekend!

Looking ahead to the week of January 29 (Week B)

Just a reminder:  be sure to join us for our PTO meeting Monday, January 29!  Third grade will be performing songs about South Carolina.  If your child is joining us, please be sure to drop him/her off at the music room no later than 6:45, wearing blue bottoms and a white shirt.  They may bring a pair of sunglasses, too!

Students enjoyed mining for rocks and minerals with Diamond Del!  It was a great end to our "Don't Take It for Granite" unit!

Hi, families! I hope you all had a great week and you're enjoying the warmer weather!

Report Cards:  As always, the end of the nine weeks is a great time to reflect on your child's progress, both academically and behaviorally.  Please be sure to set high expectations and goals with your child for the third nine weeks.  Although third grade can be a difficult transition year, we expect students to develop strong study habits, increase rigor, and become more independent, as we try our best to prepare them for the upper grades.  Encourage your child to find a quiet place to complete study guides and homework in a timely manner, practice multiplication facts daily, read a good book, and discuss what he/she has learned with you each day.  You may keep your child's report card and comments, but please sign and return the report card sleeve!

100th Day Celebration:  Please see the letter below, regarding our celebration -

On Friday, February 2, 2018 we will observe the 100th day of school. We are so thankful for an abundance of parental involvement and community partnerships, so on this day we are hoping to get 100 “BookMEN” to visit Bookman Road to be involved in some way. BookMEN can be any influential male figures in the lives of our Bookman Road students. Your visit may include eating lunch with your student, joining your student during recess, or simply dropping off or picking up your child from school.

Thank you so much for continuing to help us make Bookman Road a great place to be and we look forward to seeing you February 2nd!

Math fluency quizzes:  Due to copy numbers decreasing, students will no longer get a copy of their math fluency quizzes (For example:  11s multiplication quiz, mixed multiplication/division quizzes, mixed addition/subtraction quizzes).  This is one way we are able to save copies.  Students take these quizzes online.  They are automatically graded.  You will see their grades in Powerschool.  Please continue to ask your child how math fluency is going at school and keep practicing those facts!

A message from kindergarten:

Looking ahead to next week:  As historians, students will continue studying the American Revolution.  They will learn about patriots, loyalists, battles fought in South Carolina, as well as, famous Revolutionary heroes.    As mathematicians, they will finish studying the first half of their fraction unit and then dive into the second half of our module.  They will learn how to place fractions on a number line. We will be using the Engage New York curriculum for this unit, so please see the family letter below.  As readers, students will learn about their new reading response log, which will soon become a part of their homework packet.  In language arts, they will continue learning about prefixes, suffixes, and begin a new study of prepositional phrases.  They will also continue working on writing a text-dependent analysis.

Thank you again for all of your support!  Have a great weekend!

State House permission forms:  Be sure to check your child's communication folder this week for his/her State House field trip permission form.  Complete the form (front and back), along with the attachment, and return it to school, as soon as possible.
