Looking ahead to the week of October 23 (Week B)

Students enjoyed learning about guide words in the dictionary with Mrs. Harris in the Media Center.

Hi, families!  Happy long weekend to you all!

Study guides:  As a third grade team, we've noticed several students not completing study guides in the week they are given to do them.  We are offering students three extra points on the corresponding assessments if they complete study guides by the day they are due for review.

Looking ahead to next week:  As historians, students begin looking at European exploration. As mathematicians, they will continue learning how to tell time and calculate elapsed time.  We will be using the Engage New York curriculum for this unit, so please see the family letter below. In reading, students will take a look at informational text features (timelines, maps, charts, the appendix, glossary, photographs, illustrations, and captions).  They'll learn how these features further explain the text.  As writers, they will produce another personal narrative.  Students will study comparative adjectives and adverbs, as well.

Thank you again for all of your support!  Enjoy the extra time with your sweet kiddos this weekend!

We enjoyed hanging out at North Springs Park Sunday afternoon!  A great time was had by all, who were able to attend!  Thank you to our homeroom representatives for organizing the outing!

Hi, families!

Multiplication fact quizzes:  Students have already taken their first multiplication quiz!  A letter about multiplication will go home in your child's communication folder Thursday, October 5.  Please go ahead and encourage your child to start memorizing multiplication facts!  A copy of a multiplication table went home in your Open House booklet at the beginning of the year and students have a copy in their homework packets each week.

Looking ahead to next week:  As historians, students will wrap up their study on Native Americans and begin looking at European exploration. As mathematicians, they will learn about telling time and elapsed time.  We will be using the Engage New York curriculum for this unit, so please see the family letter below.  You can also check out this link for more information: All about time! In reading, students will continue working on CLOSE readings and finding text evidence to support answers.  They will also wrap up their study on verb tenses and narrative writing unit.

Hello, families!  I hope you all are enjoying the cooler weather!

Looking ahead to next week:  As scientists, students will wrap up their plant unit by taking a closer look at plant adaptations.  They will also kick off their second social studies unit, "First South Carolinians" (Native Americans). As mathematicians, the children will dive into their first unit on multiplication.  It is a short unit, but go ahead and start practicing those multiplication facts!  They'll have their first individual multiplication quiz on the 1s tables next week!  Be sure to check out our Topic 4 family letter below.  In reading, students will learn learn how to answer text-dependent questions, by locating information within a passage.  As writers, they will learn about verb tenses, as well as, narrative elements.  They will also learn how to restate questions in order to form complete sentences.

A note from our Homeroom Mom, Mrs. Fakas:  In years past, we have gotten our children's classes together periodically for super-casual outings at North Springs Park. We have asked folks to spread the word to families in other classes, too, so we can come together for some fun, allowing the grown-ups to catch up and watch our kiddos enjoy spending time with their classmates outside of school.  We will bring bottled water, a goody to munch on to be shared, kid-friendly music, and sports balls, frisbees, etc.  Please plan to join us on Sunday, October 8, at 2 o'clock at North Springs Park.  (This will be relaxing and low-key... come when you can... even if you're running late!)  If you have any questions, let us know! Of course, all family members are welcome to join in this afternoon of fun!  We hope to see you there!

Thank you again for all of your support!  You're the best!
