Hi, families!  I hope you all had a wonderful week!  Thank you again for your patience and understanding, while I've been out sick this week.  I sure have missed my kids!

LIFESKILL of the week:  Organization - Encourage your child to celebrate ways of showing organization!

Report Cards:  As always, the end of a nine weeks is a great time to reflect on your child's progress, both academically and behaviorally.  Please be sure to set expectations and goals with your child for the second nine weeks.  Although third grade can be a difficult transition year, we expect students to develop strong study habits and increase rigor, which will help them down the road in the upper grades.  Encourage your child to find a quiet place to complete study guides in a timely manner, practice multiplication facts daily, and discuss what he/she has learned with you each day.

Halloween:  Please be mindful that we do not have Halloween celebrations at school.  Students will enjoy sweet treats at our winter party and end-of-the-year party.  Thank you for honoring our school's healthy snack policy!

Looking ahead to next week:  As historians, students will continue their unit of study on the Colonial Period. As mathematicians, they will learn about patterns in multiplication.  We will be using the Envision curriculum for this unit, so please see the family letter below. In reading, students will take a look at sequencing and signal words.  As writers, they will continue revisit different types of sentences (compound, complex, run-on) and learn about the elements of writing a friendly letter.  Students will use what they learn about letters to write one to a veteran, which will be handed out at our school's Veterans Day celebration.

Thank you again for all of your support!  Have a great weekend!

A message from our PTO:  Hello Bookman Parents and Families!  Our T-Shirt sale and first Beacon Spirit day were a huge success! Thank you for your continued support!  T-Shirts were distributed on September 28th, but it has come to our attention that a few students did not receive their order.  If you purchased a T shirt(s) and did not receive your order please contact Lily Park at lilypark212@gmail.com as soon as possible.

Kindness Rocks (from Mrs. Spangler):  Our guidance counselor, Mrs. Spangler, would love for you to check out this great site about kindness and kids-  Kindness Rocks

A reminder from our administrators:  In an effort to start quality teaching and learning at 7:50, we encourage families to allow students to walk to class independently.  If you'd like to discuss concerns with your child's teacher, please contact her by phone or email, so you are able to confidentially discuss concerns before 7:50 or after 3:15

Looking ahead to next week:  As historians, students will wrap up their study on Native Americans and begin looking at European exploration. As mathematicians, they will learn about telling time and elapsed time.  We will be using the Engage New York curriculum for this unit, so please see the family letter below. In reading, students will take a look at Native American legends and determine the theme of those legends.  As writers, they will be introduced to text-dependent analysis, which will coincide with the legends they will be reading.  They will also learn about adjectives and adverbs that compare.

Thank you again for all of your support!  Have a great week!

Looking ahead to the week of October 10 (Week A)

Students enjoy working on "Read to Someone" during our Daily 5 language arts block.  They build fluency skills and practice reading with expression.  They also learn how to talk about text.

What an unexpected break from school we've had!  I hope you and your families have remained safe and sound.  I look forward to seeing the kids soon!

Multiplication fact quizzes:  Students will begin taking multiplication quizzes the week of October 10.  A letter about multiplication will go home in your child's communication folder Thursday, October 13.  Please go ahead and encourage your child to start memorizing multiplication facts!  A copy of a multiplication table went home in your Open House booklet at the beginning of the year and students have a copy in their homework packets each week.

Half day:  Students will have early dismissal Thursday, October 13.  As always, if your child's transportation changes, please be sure to send a note or notify the office directly.  Remember, lunch will be served before students leave at 11:30.

A message from our Health Advisory Council:  The Bookman Road Health Advisory Council is devoted to ensure that every student at Bookman Road Elementary has a safe and healthy environment that will promote student learning at its fullest. To align with the district’s nutrition policy as well as our own vision, sweet snacks and unhealthy foods for various activities, celebrations, and rewards are asked to not be brought to school. Recognizing that schools play an important role both in educating students and promoting their well-being, we feel we should send consistent messages to our students. We ask that you please follow the guidelines below.

*Sweet items such as cakes, candies, cookies, ice cream, etc. will be reserved for the two class celebrations that take place before Winter Break and the final days of school. This will provide two fun opportunities to build community through celebration while enjoying special treats.
*If parents would like to send a sweet treat for their child’s birthday, or in celebration for being Blinky’s Buddy, it needs to be for their child only for lunch.

We greatly appreciate the support in creating a healthy environment for our students! Below is the general guidelines that have been applied to all items on the acceptable snack list. Approved snack items that meet the healthy standards provided by the district and are not sweet treats, will then be considered accepted snacks.

If the saturated fat percentage of daily value (satfat%DV) and the carbohydrates percentage of daily value (carb%DV) are less than or equal to 10, then the item passes.

If satfat % DV & carbs % DV < 10 then item passes
If satfat % DV or carbs %DV > 10, then item fails

Looking ahead to next week:  As historians, students will dive into the world of Native Americans. As mathematicians, the children wrap up their introduction to multiplication (Topic 4).  Their study guide (which was issued last week) is due Wednesday, October 12.  They will have a unit test Thursday, October 13.  In reading, students will continue learning about main ideas in nonfiction passages.  They will read a story from their Treasures series throughout the week and take a comprehension test toward the end of the week.  As writers, they will wrap up their unit on verb tenses, as well as, publish their narrative writing.  Also, due to the unexpected break, students will turn in their homework packet 7 Thursday, October 13.  They will receive homework packet 9 that same day.  Students will not have a packet 8 this year.  Thank you for your flexibility!

Thank you again for all of your support!  Have a great week!
