Week of March 4

Hello, families!  I hope you all have enjoyed your week so far!

IMPORTANT:  Our class is going to Cowpens next Thursday - March 7!  Please be mindful of some vital information going home in your child's communication folder this Thursday and the beginning of next week.  You will need to look over it for procedures.  Your child will need to bring a bagged lunch that day (in a plastic grocery bag or a gallon-sized Ziploc bag), labeled with his/her name.  Lunches must be completely disposable - no thermoses, silverware or water bottles.  Please also send a drink with your child (juice or water - no sodas).  Both your child's lunch and drink need to have his/her name written on them with a permanent marker. Also, be aware that you will need to provide transportation to have your child at the back bus loop between 6:30-6:45 on March 7.  We will be departing shortly after 6:45 and cannot wait for those who are late.  The third grade teachers will provide a snack and water bottle to a from Cowpens for each child.  You will be expected to pick your child up in the back bus loop at 3:30, unless your child is a friend who normally attends Breakers.  Mr. Guliano will send a ConnectEd message, if we are running late.  Please let me know if you have any questions, as soon as possible.

If your child completed an Active Gamecock log, please send that in as soon as possible.

After reviewing your child's interim with him/her, please sign and return it as soon as possible.  Interims went home in last week's communication folders.

Looking ahead:  Students will wrap up their fraction unit with a test on Wednesday.  Please note a study guide will be sent home this Friday.  Students will continue practicing good elements of writing and PASS test-taking strategies.  As scientists, the children will explore sound investigations, which focus on pitch.  In reading, students will review word relationships.

Tuesday will be a half-day for students.  Dismissal is at 11:30.  If your child's transportation changes, please send in a note.

Thank you again for all of your support and enthusiasm!  Have a happy weekend!

Students enjoyed helping their kindergarten book buddies build "solid shape" cities!

Week of February 25

Happy four-day week, families!  I hope you all had a wonderful four-day weekend with your kids.  Did you get to play in the snow?

Thank you so much for the sweet and thoughtful Valentines Day goodies.  Your families were too kind to think of me!  We had a great Valentine card swap!

Interims are going home this week!  Please take a moment to review your child's interim with him/her.  It is a good time to review goals that were set at the beginning of the nine weeks.  The third nine weeks tends to be a difficult time of the year in third grade, as historical trends show... the kids are feeling a bit of spring fever!  Please remind your child to make good choices, both academically and behaviorally.  Please sign and return the interim, after reviewing it with your child.

Cookies!  Please continue to encourage your child to sell cookies for our fundraiser.  The money will go toward UV shades on our playground and a brand new school marquee.  The fundraiser ends on February 21.

Let's get moving!  Students are encouraged to fill out their Active Gamecock forms each day through February 25.  We ask students to jot down their 30 minutes of daily exercise (or more!).  Students who complete a log will receive free tickets to USC softball and baseball games.

Stuffed with Love:  We are still collecting one new or gently used stuffed animal, as our grade-level charity.  These stuffed animals will be donated to the children at Sister Care.  The charity ends February 28.

Looking ahead:  Students will continue learning about folktales and tall tales.  They will test on the three types of tales March 1.  As writers, students will continue practicing elements of good prompt writing, in preparation for our first round of PASS testing (March 19 and 20).  Students will also learn about fun and useful test-taking strategies.  As mathematicians, students will enjoy learning about equivalent fractions and ordering fractions.  As scientists, students will be introduced to our sound unit.  They will complete various hands-on experiments that test their sound discrimination and introduce them to the idea of vibrations creating sounds.

Please continue to have your child practice his/her multiplication facts on a daily basis.  Students need to be able to correctly answer multiplication questions in a very short amount of time, as this will prepare them more for the upper grades.

Thank you again for your never-ending support and enthusiasm!

Kathleen and her family recently visited Fort Moultrie and sent in this picture.  Kathleen shared what she learned on her trip and related it to our American Revolution unit of study!  As always, please feel free to send in photos of places your family may visit that pertain to our units of study.  It is so excited for the kids to share what they learn!

Week of February 18

Hello, families!  I hope you all have enjoyed your week so far!

In your child's communication folder this week, you will find our next "Being There Experience" permission form.  We will be heading to Cowpens to learn all about the battle site and its part in the American Revolution.  It is VERY important that you complete the form and return it to school as soon as possible!  Our trip is less than three weeks away!

Valentines Day:  Please remember your child is welcome to send in a Valentine card for every classmate.  Please do not send in candy.

Munchies for Moms will be taking place this Thursday, February 14, in our school cafe, 7:30 - 8:00.  Please park in the back lot, if you would like to join your child for a morning treat!

Students who complete a log will receive free tickets to a USC softball and baseball game.

Stuffed with Love:  We are still collecting one new or gently used stuffed animal, as our grade-level charity.  These stuffed animals will be donated to the children at Sister Care.  The charity ends February 28.

Family Fun Night:  If you would still like to donate money toward our Family Fun Night basket, it would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you, Mrs. Dotson, for putting it together!

Looking ahead:  Students will continue to learn about fractions and how to model them in several ways.  They will wrap up their unit on poetry in reading and test on Wednesday, February 20 (a study guide will be sent home on Thursday, February 14).  As writers, students will continue to prepare for their first PASS test, which is less than 25 school days away!  Students will also wrap up our government unit of study and test on Friday, February 22 (a study guide will be sent home on Thursday, February 14).

Please continue to have your child practice his/her multiplication facts on a daily basis.  Students need to be able to correctly answer multiplication questions in a very short amount of time, as this will prepare them more for the upper grades.

Please also take a moment to chat with your child about the choices he/she makes in school, both academically and behaviorally.  This can be an "antsy" time in the school year.

Thank you again for all of your support and enthusiasm!  Please know that it means more to us than you know!  Have a wonderful rest of the week and stay warm this long weekend!

Check out some wonderful moments from our most recent "Being There Experience" to the Lexington County Museum.  We had a blast learning about colonial life in South Carolina.  Thank you again to Mrs. Armstrong, Ms. Butler and Nurse Johnson for chaperoning!

Week of February 11

We enjoyed the production, "Freedom Train," at the Koger Center.  It was an educational hook for our unit about slavery.  Special thanks to Mrs. Moody and Mrs. Thomas for chaperoning our trip!

Hello, families!  I hope you all have enjoyed your week!

Looking ahead:  Students will continue their study of poetry, focusing on refrain, alliteration, personification simile and metaphor.  They will also study different types of poems.  As writers, they will continue to review elements of prompt writing and kick off a descriptive essay.  In math, students will learn about the placement of fractions on a number line.  As historians, students will begin learning about our national and state government.

Be sure to have your child continue to practice his/her multiplication facts on a daily basis at home!

Our grade level charity, "Stuffed with Love," is started on Monday, February 4!  We are asking all Beacons to donate ONE new or gently used stuffed animal, which will be donated to children at Sister Care.  We hope these stuffed animals bring children comfort through difficult times.  This charity will run through February 28.

After reviewing your child's report card with him/her, you may keep the report card, but please sign and return the cover as soon as possible.

Say, "Cheese!"  Our class picture will be taken on Monday, February 11.

Please be reminded of the Valentines Day procedures at BRES.  Students cannot pass out candy that day.  They may pass out cards (which we'll do at the end of the day).  Any candy sent to school or attached to a card, will be returned home.  Thank you for your understanding and helping us keep BRES healthy!  A note from our Health Committee:
Dear Bookman Family,
With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, we wanted to take this opportunity to review our policies and procedures regarding this day.  We will not be celebrating this holiday in school; this includes any "party" type of celebrations, costume attire, or treat bags.  Classroom snack choices, for those teachers who allow them, will continue to follow our healthy snack guidelines which are found in your child's agenda book and on our website.  Teachers are asked to ensure adherence to these guidelines during the day. We appreciate your understanding, acceptance and support of these policies.
Sincerely,
Your Bookman Road Health Advisory Committee

Also, please send in a donation for our Family Fun Night basket, if you are able to do so.  Mrs. Dotson is putting together something very special!
I hope you all enjoy your weekend and find time to get out and play!
