Looking ahead to the week of March 3

There is still a bit of time left to donate non-perishable food items to fourth grade's charity, Backpack Buddies!

Hello, families!  I hope you all had some time to enjoy the warm weather these past few days!

Looking ahead:  The children will kick off a new unit in math... all about area and perimeter (lessons 13-1, 13-3, 13-4, and 14-1 through 14-3). Please continue to encourage your child to practice his/her facts every day!  Students will continue to have mixed operation quizzes throughout the rest of the school year.  The children will wrap up their study of government with a test next Monday (please be sure your child has completed his/her study guide by Friday).  Students will then start their next unit in science, "Good Vibrations" (Sound).  In reading, students will compare and contrast the theme, setting, and plot of stories written by the same author.  Students will also continue preparing for the PASS writing test, which is in a few weeks!  They will also review possessives, prefixes, suffixes, and root words.

Thank you again for all of your support!

Catching up this week and looking ahead to the week of February 24

What a week it has been!

Hello, families!  I hope you all stayed safe and warm these past few days!  I am sure we're all looking forward to continuing to thaw out, as these spring-like temperatures head our way!  I can't wait to see the kids and hear about their time off.

I know the kids were exciting about sharing their Valentines!  The holiday has passed, but if your child would still like to pass out cards, he/she may do so Wednesday, February 19, during our morning meeting.  Please be mindful of our school's healthy snack procedure (no sweets, please)!

This week:  We have a lot of catching up to do!  Students will continue learning what was originally scheduled for last week.  In math, they will learn about angles, polygons and triangles (lessons 11-2 through 11-4).  As historians, students will wrap up their unit on the American Revolution.  They will review for the test this Thursday and be assessed Friday, February 21.  Students will complete the district writing assessment this Wednesday.  They will continue reading their American Revolutionary biographies.  Students will also finish their study of conjunctions.

Looking ahead:  The children will continue working on geometry (lessons 11-5, through 11-8).  Students will review their math study guide in class Thursday, February 27, and test Friday, February 28, on Topic 11.  Please continue to encourage your child to practice his/her facts every day!  Students will continue to have mixed operation quizzes throughout the rest of the school year.  As historians, students will kick off a unit of study on government.  In reading, students will wrap up their American Revolution biographies and create a product to showcase what they learned about their hero/heroine. Students will also continue preparing for the PASS writing test, which is in March.  They will revisit reference materials like dictionaries, thesauri, etc.

Homework:  Students will turn in Week 21's homework packet/reading log Friday, February 21.  They will receive a new packet/reading log (Week 22) this Friday.  It will be due Friday, February 28.

Thank you again for all of your support, understanding and flexibility!  Have a great short week!

Students will also continue preparing for the PASS writing test, which is in March.  They will revisit reference materials like dictionaries, thesauri, etc.  Students will receive a new homework packet/reading log this Friday.  I know they have a long weekend, so I am looking to be more lenient on them.  I will encourage the children to do what they can over the next week!
*Please note, some lessons are subject to change dates, due to inclement weather days.

Random Acts of Kindness Week (from Mrs. Spangler):  It's our school-wide "Random Acts of Kindness Week." In order to show awareness of this week and to show off our Bookman Road Spirit, we will be having a few spirit days.
*Please see the schedule under the "Important Dates" section, if you would like to have your child participate!

A note from fourth grade, regarding its charity:  We will be collecting the non-perishable food items as well as any monetary donation  with the goal of being able to fill 30 “backpack” bags for distribution, which will help kids around South Carolina.  We cannot accomplish our mission without your help.
*Please see their write-up in this week's "Beacon" for more information.

Valentines Day UPDATE:  Students will have school Friday, February 14, in order to make up one of the snow days! Since students will be at school, our administration has given each grade level the opportunity to choose whether or not to allow students to pass out Valentines.  Third grade will take this opportunity to let students pass out cards and/or a healthy snack (No sweets!), stickers, pencils at the end of the day!  If your child chooses to bring cards Friday, February 14, please do not have your child address the cards "TO" individual classmates.  Please have your child only fill in the "FROM" part of the card, as this makes the delivery much quicker and easier!  Also, please remember that if your child brings cards in, there must be one card for each classmate.  We have 19 students in our class.  Please have your child refrain from passing out cards to students in other classes, as this will need to be done outside of school, so that students do not disrupt teaching and learning time.  Be sure to check out this friendly reminder from our Health Advisory Committee:

Dear Bookman Family,

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, we want to take this opportunity to review our policies and procedures regarding this day. We will not be celebrating this holiday in school; this includes any "party" type of celebrations or treat bags. Classroom snack choices, for those teachers who allow them, will continue to follow our acceptable snack guidelines which are found in your child's agenda book and on our website. Teachers are asked to ensure adherence to these guidelines during the day. We appreciate your understanding, acceptance and support of these policies.

Sincerely,
Your Bookman Road Health Advisory Committee
Report Cards:  Please be sure to sign and return your child's report card cover, as soon as possible!  You may keep the report card.

Half-day:  Students will have a half-day Thursday, February 13.  Please make sure you send a note, if your child's mode of transportation changes!

I hope you all have wonderful week!  Stay warm!  Thank you again for all of your support!

Looking ahead to the week of February 10

Thank you to all of the BookMEN, who joined us for our 100th day celebration!  Check out some snapshots from lunch!

Hello, families!  I hope you all enjoyed your weekend with your awesome kids!

Looking ahead:  The children will kick off a brand new unit on geometry (lessons 11-1 through 11-4).  Students will skip units 9 and 10 for now... we'll come back to fractions later in the school year.  Please continue to encourage your child to practice his/her facts every day, as this will help him/her with division!  Students will continue to have mixed operation quizzes throughout the rest of the school year.  As historians, the children will continue to study major battles of the American Revolution, as well as, famous heroes and heroines of the war. In reading, students will continue reading their American Revolution biographies. They will study conjunctions (both coordinating and subordinating). Students will also continue preparing for the PASS writing test, which is in March.  They will take part in an upper-grade prompt practice Tuesday and Wednesday.  These essays will be scored, but will not count as a grade.  We just want to see how the children have grown when it comes to their writing skills!
