Looking ahead to the week of April 13

David Biedrzycki visited our school Tuesday, March 24.  Students learned all about his process of writing, where he gets his ideas, and the art of illustrating on the computer!

Hello, families!  I hope you all had a wonderful Spring Break!

Picture Day:  Students will have spring pictures taken Tuesday, April 7.  Order forms went home the week before Spring Break, in your child's homework folder.

ACT Testing:  Students are preparing for the ACT test, which will take place April 28 -30.  Students will be tested in the areas of reading, writing, and math.  Each test will be timed.  Students will continue reviewing what they've learned all year, in order to prepare for the big test!  They will be reminded each day that this test is not something to stress about, but to look at as their time to shine and show all they've learned this year!  It should be an exciting week!  We like to make this week very special for students, which is why we are reaching out and asking for donations.  Since testing days are so draining, we are planning on having a breakfast item (students should still eat breakfast before school, though!), then handing out something sweet during our breaks and finally giving them a snack and a juice when testing is over for the day.  It makes the day seem a little “sweeter!”  If you are able to make a donation, please contact me at awest@richland2.org, as soon as possible, to let me know the items you'd like to send in and the specific day!  Thank you, in advance, for helping make testing more enjoyable for the children!  The following items are needed (23 of each):
  • 3 days of juice boxes  - CHECK!  All three days of juice boxes have been donated! Yay!
  • 3 days of breakfast type food (Muffins, cereal bars, Pop Tarts, etc) Two days of breakfast have been donated! Yay!  We still need one more days worth of breakfast items!
  • 3 or so bags of individually wrapped candy (Smarties, Nerds, etc… something that is not sticky and messy.) - CHECK!  All three days of candy have been donated! Yay!
  • 3 days of a snack-type item (pretzels, baked chips, fruit snacks, etc.) - CHECK!  All three days of snacks have been donated! Yay!
  • Napkins (enough for all three days)
*Please note that we have nut allergies in our classroom!

Looking ahead:  As mathematicians, students will continue learning about angles, polygons, triangles, quadrilaterals, and how to combine shapes.  Please check out our Topic 11 family letter, to help you better understand the content covered. We'll continue our mixed operation quizzes.  During language arts, students will study test-taking strategies and begin reviewing skills for the ACT test.  The children will continue working on cursive handwriting and prompt writing.   As scientists, students will study heat and the states of matter.

Topic 11 (Geometry) Home Letter:

Report Cards:  Students will receive their report card in this week's communication folder.  Please take a moment to look over it with your child and set goals for the last nine weeks of third grade.  Sign and return the report card cover.  You may keep the report card and comments.

State Museum "Being There Experience" permission form:  Your child will receive a permission form for the State Museum in his/her communication folder this week.  Please be sure to sign and return it, as soon as possible.  All forms are due April 16.  We will need one chaperone for this trip, which is Thursday, May 14.  Our chaperone will be chosen randomly.  There will be a chaperone fee, which the chaperone will need to pay, once we we arrive to the museum.

MAP Testing:  Students will take their reading MAP test Tuesday, April 14.  Students are encouraged not to stress over this test, but to just do their personal best!  These results will show their growth over the course of this year.

Field Day reminder:  Field Day is Friday, April 10!  Volunteers are still needed!  If you are able to volunteer, please contact Mr. Schirmer, as soon as possible!  Please be sure your child dresses appropriately for the weather and wears tennis shoes.  Students may also want to put sunscreen on, before leaving home Friday morning.  Please do not send sunscreen in to be applied at school.  Also, your child may bring a bottle of water from home to enjoy, while doing various activities outside.  Please be sure to write his/her name on it with a permanent marker.

I hope you all have a  great week!  Thank you again for everything!
