Looking ahead to the week of November 3

Daylight Saving Time is just around the corner!  Don't forget to "fall back" this Sunday.  Enjoy the extra hour with your family!

Hello, families!  I hope you all are having a great week and enjoying the cooler weather!

A note about Halloween:  With Halloween fast approaching, we wanted to take this opportunity to review our policies and procedures regarding this day.  We will not be celebrating this holiday in school; this includes any "party" type of celebrations, costume attire, or treat bags.  Teachers are asked to ensure adherence to these guidelines during the day. We appreciate your understanding, acceptance and support of these policies.

Half day:  Students have a half day Friday, October 31.  Lunch will be served.  Students will be dismissed at 11:30.  If your child's transportation changes, please be sure to send a note!

Report cards will be issued this Thursday!  Please take a moment to review your child's report card with him/her.  Now is a good time to reflect on this nine weeks and set goals for the next quarter.  You will also find a self-reflection in your child's report card cover.  Please sign and return only the report card cover.  You may keep the contents of the report card cover.

Friendly reminder about responsibility:  I have several students that are forgetting to bring back either their communication folder, homework packet, and/or study guide to class. Please talk with your child at home about using the LIFESKILL of Responsibility so he/she is prepared for class. This past week, I had over half the class not turn in or have their social studies books, fact file, or study guide to review for our test in class. We hold high expectations for our students in third grade and I want them to be prepared to succeed!

Looking ahead:  As mathematicians, students will revisit multiplication (Unit 5), using our Envision books.  This means, students will have a textbook to use the next few units.  Students are welcome to take home this textbook any day, so long as they bring it back the following school day.  Students also have access to the Envision web site.  Their log in information is located on the password sheet, which is in their agenda books.  We'll revisit the Engage New York curriculum later down the road! We'll continue our multiplication quizzes next week.  Students will be tested on their 2s facts! During language arts, students will learn about conjunctions and they'll be introduced to cursive handwriting.  The children will write a letter to a veteran, which will be passed out at our Veterans Day celebration.  Remember, the children will have their second grade high frequency spelling word pre-test next week.  Students will continue learning how to identify the main idea of a story in reading.  As historians, students will complete their unit of study of the Colonial Period in South Carolina.  Their study guide is due Friday, November 7.  Students will have an open book test Monday, November 10.

Health Screening:  Students will have their health screening Thursday, November 6.  If your child wears glasses, please make sure he/she does not leave them at home this day!

A note from the guidance counselor: Mrs. Spangler would like to share her class blog with you so that you are informed about the topics she is covering with students.  http://brecounselor.blogspot.com/

A note from the Veterans Day Committee: Those who have served in our Armed Forces are the foundation of this great country we live in.  They have sacrificed their time, strength, portions of their lives and in some cases, given the ultimate sacrifice and have died in defense of our nation.  We would like to honor those veterans by creating a Wall of Honor.  Please ask either your homeroom teacher or Mrs. Sadler for a "brick" to write your veteran's name and information on.  Please return these as soon as possible or at the latest by Nov. 10th to be included in the wall. Also, please invite your veteran to our special Veterans Day program on November 11th.  If you have a picture you would like to include in our special program please send it electronically to rnord@richland2.org.

An opportunity to donate:  Please feel free to share the following site with family, friends, or members of the community, if they would like to donate items to our class!  We'll periodically add to this site throughout the year for items needed in our classroom.  You can search for Bookman Road Elementary, Mrs. West's class to find out more!  CrowdED Donations

I hope you all have a great rest of the week and a wonderful weekend!
