Looking ahead to the week of October 27

Hello, families!  I hope you all are having a great week!

"Being There Experience" payment plan:  In your child's communication folder three weeks ago, you found a "Being There Experience" payment letter.  Please read over this letter carefully, then sign and return it, as soon as possible.  The first payment (or full payment) was due Thursday, October 9.

A note about Halloween:  With Halloween fast approaching, we wanted to take this opportunity to review our policies and procedures regarding this day.  We will not be celebrating this holiday in school; this includes any "party" type of celebrations, costume attire, or treat bags.  Teachers are asked to ensure adherence to these guidelines during the day. We appreciate your understanding, acceptance and support of these policies.

Communication folders:  You will receive a special note about our upcoming multiplication quizzes this week!  Please read over it carefully and hold on to the letter going home... it has every fact your child will need to know on the back of the sheet!

Looking ahead:  As mathematicians, students will be studying Module 2 -Topic D, Lesson 19 and 21, which will center on finding differences.  Remember, you can check out the Engage New York links at the bottom of our class blog, for more information about your child's math curriculum (Topic D ). We'll begin our multiplication quizzes next week!  Students will be quizzed on their 1s facts.  During language arts, students will learn about linking verbs and adjectives/adverbs that compare.  The children begin reviewing parts of a friendly letter.  They'll later write a letter to a veteran, which will be passed out at our Veterans Day celebration.  Remember, the children will have their first grade spelling word post-test Wednesday, October 29.  Students will be learning how to identify the main idea of a story in reading.  As historians, students will wrap up their study of Native Americans and European explorers.  Their study guide is due Wednesday, October 29.  Students will be tested Thursday, October 30.

An opportunity to donate:  Please feel free to share the following site with family, friends, or members of the community, if they would like to donate items to our class!  We'll periodically add to this site throughout the year for items needed in our classroom.  You can search for Bookman Road Elementary, Mrs. West's class to find out more!  CrowdED Donations

Picture Day:  Picture day is Monday, October 27!  If you would like to purchase pictures, please follow the directions on the packet that went home last week.

Health Screening:  Students will have their health screening Thursday, November 6.  If your child wears glasses, please make sure he/she does not leave them at home this day!

A note from the guidance counselor: Mrs. Spangler would like to share her class blog with you so that you are informed about the topics she is covering with students.  http://brecounselor.blogspot.com/

A note from the Veterans Day Committee: Those who have served in our Armed Forces are the foundation of this great country we live in.  They have sacrificed their time, strength, portions of their lives and in some cases, given the ultimate sacrifice and have died in defense of our nation.  We would like to honor those veterans by creating a Wall of Honor.  Please ask either your homeroom teacher or Mrs. Sadler for a "brick" to write your veteran's name and information on.  Please return these as soon as possible or at the latest by Nov. 10th to be included in the wall. Also, please invite your veteran to our special Veterans Day program on November 11th.  If you have a picture you would like to include in our special program please send it electronically to rnord@richland2.org.

Thanks to all of you, who donated toward our Family Fun Night basket!  I appreciate Mrs. Cortez and Mrs. Jenkins for putting it together!  I hope you all have a great rest of the week and a wonderful weekend!

We enjoyed visiting the Lexington County Museum last week!  Students learned a bit about the Colonial Period, which is our next unit in Social Studies.  A special thanks to Azaria's mom and Daniela's dad for chaperoning!  Check out some snapshots of our "Being There Experience!"
